Question

Answer for (a)

Filteration:- It is a physical process to separate solid from liquid in a heterogenous solution mechanically.

We use filter paper for sepatating solid and liquid. This filteration depends upon the pore size of the filter paper and size of the solid. If size of the solid is bigger than pore size of the filter paper, filteration can be done easily. In case of smaller size of solid, sepatation can be done through centrifugation process.

Crystallisation:-  It is a chemical process in which one component seperates out by forming cystals from other in a homogenous soluton.

In a homogenous solution, one of the component starts forming cystal and seperates from the solution, hence forming heterogenous solution. Now from this, one can easily separate solid from liquid through filteration process.

Explanation / Answer

(a) What makes filtration differs from crystallization process? (b) An experimental filter press having an area of 0.0414 m2 is used to filter an aqueous BaCOs slurry at a constant pressure of 267 kPa. The filtration equation obtained was Uv-10.25x 1 06 V + 3.4x 103. where t is in s and V in m3. C) If the same slurry and conditions are used in a leaf press having an area of 6.97 m2, how long will it take to obtain 1000 litre of filtrate? After filtration, the cake is to be washed with 100 litre of water. Calculate the time of washing (i)
