Question
The following statement is similar to the statements you will see on exams. Write a short paragraph describing whether the statement is correct or incorrect and the reasoning behind your answers. Paragraphs that demonstrate complete and thorough reasoning will receive full points. If a person's Helper T cells were able to be activated and were able to clonally expand, but were unable to secrete cytokines, that person would be more susceptible to both bacterial and viral infections because of decreased responses of Cytotoxic T cells and B cells.Explanation / Answer
Based on the given data,
1 & 2)
Yes, the given statement is Incorrect. T-lymphocytes are the major type of immune cells that are involved in cell mediated immunity. They are categorized into two types based on the type of receptor they express, namely T helper cells and T cytotoxic cells.
T helper cells contain CD4 as a cell surface receptor. These cells protect the immune system either by the release of IFNs (interferon) or ILs (interleukin). These TH cells are differentiated into TH1, TH2, TH17 cells. For example, TH1 cells show immune response against intracellular pathogens. They are triggered by the cytokines namely, IL-2 and IL-12. These immune cells play a key role in activation of macrophages.
The T helper cells majorly involved in the activation of B cells and Tc cells. The following diagram shows the role of TH2 cells in activation of B cells:
