Question
Consider the graph below. Use this information and what you know class to answer the following 3 questions. Answer only in the space provided, and write legibly. You will not be graded on grammar or spelling, however, we need to be able to read and understand your answers. What results are shown in the graph? Include in your answer a description of the x and y axes and the 3 plotted lines. Recall that Km=1 /2 Vmax. What is the value of Km for the enzyme-catalyzed and enzymecatalyzed+inhibitor reactions? Why arc enzymes important in cell biology? Name 3 enzymes and 1 inhibitor that we discussed in class this semester.Explanation / Answer
1- x axis: concentration of the substrate (generally in moles or millimoles)
y axis: velocity of the reaction which is nmber of moles or millimoles of the substrate converted to product in unit time.
For the enzyme catalyzed reaction, Vmax is 0.2 unit/ time; whereas for the enzyme catalyzed reaction in presence of inhibitor, Vmax is 0.1 unit/ time. Uncatalyzed reaction is even slower- hence this reaction has a high activation energy which is lowered in presence of the enzyme.
2- Km is the substrate concentration at which the reaction proceeds at a velocity half of its maximum velocity.
enzyme catalyzed reaction: Km = 1/2 Vmax = 0.1 mole or millimole (unit for substrate)
enzyme catalyzed reaction inhibitor; Km = 1/2 Vmax = 0.05 mole or millimole
3- Enzymes control the speed of chemical reactions in the living body. They catalyze the biochemical reactions by lowering the activation energy of the reaction. Without the enzymes, the reactions will occur but at a very slow rate- which might not sustain living process.
3 enzymes are hexokinase, aldolase & amylase.
An inhibitor of enzyme is Cyanide for the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase.
