Question

Assuming that the total volume does not change after 0.185 g of NaCl is added to 1.0 L of a saturated solution of AgCl, calculate the number of moles of Ag+ ion in the solution after equilibrium has been reestablished. For AgCl, Ksp = 1.8 x 10-10. How / Why / Show Work.

Explanation / Answer

AgCl< => Ag+ + Cl- moles of NaCl =0.185/58.5=0.003162 total concentration of Cl- = 0.003162/1 (moles/litre) since NaCl disassociates more than AgCl concentration of Cl- from NaCl will be dominant and hence total is considered the same therefore Ksp=[Ag+][Cl-] ksp=[Ag+]*0.003162 Ksp=1.8*10^-10 therefore Ag+ = 0.57*10^-7 M moles of Ag+ = (0.57*10^-7)*(1l) =0.57*10^-7 moles
