2. Imagine that, on your way home, you walk past a saloon where two thirsty people, Drew and Pat, are arguing about the different ways that bacteria make ATP. Drew favors aerobic respiration, and Pat likes fermentation. Describe their most compelling arguments in this form:

What are two different and significant reasons why Drew is right, and aerobic respiration is better for the bacteria than fermentation?

What are two different and significant reasons why Pat is right, and fermentation is better for the bacteria than aerobic respiration?

Finally, which of the two topers do you agree with and why? (you must pick one of them, and justify your choice)

Explanation / Answer

Drew supports that aerobic respiration is used for the production of ATP and the reason could be:

A. First of all the no. Of ATP produced in the aerobic respiration are large in no. That is 32ATP as compared to the 2ATP formed in fermentation. So it will support the metabolism of bacteria for long duration and to carry out metabolic functions which need more energy.so it is the most efficient way of producing energy.

B. Second reason is there are many by product formed during Krebs cycle which directly or indirectly helps in the metabolism of other metabolites as well as fundamental Molecules like protein etc

On the other hand Pat is also right in favouring the fermentation ad a source for ARP production.reasons are:

A. There are many bacteria which are obligate anaerobes for whom the oxygen is toxic. So the fermentation I's the sole way of them to form ATP.

B. Anaerobic respiration or fermentation also supports the microorganisms in adverse condition.like at high pH,high salt concentration when microorganisms are incapable of carry out whole glycolysis and Krebs cycle they carry out fermentation to produce ATP soon.

For me, the aerobic respiration is most favourable for me.so I am agree with Dew.

Because the aerobic respiration is more efficient in production of ATP as compared to the fermentation.
