Rank the following ions in order of increasing first ionization energy: O2-, Mg2+, F-, Na+Explanation / Answer
O2- > F- > Na+ > Mg2+ all ions have stable configuration of 1s2 2s2 2p6 However nuclear charge is different. O2- has 2 additional electrons compared to neutral O atom and thus nuclear attraction slightly decreases . Thus it is relatively easier to remove electron. Similarly F- has one additional electron while Na+ lost one electron and thus there will be stronger nuclear attraction on electrons and thus tougher to remove electrons. Mg2+ has more protons compared to electrons and thus much difficult to remove electron.
