Question
Please clearly express what each answer is and the work you used to get that answer. Some of yall hastily put things and I can NOT decide what your actual answer is. I am very generous with points and my feedback so please help me! Thanks
A diffusion rate study was done using a 75 cm glass tube, NH3 gas, and an unknown gas that reacts with NH3 to form a white precipitate. In 340 seconds the NH3 traveled 55 cm and the unknown gas traveled 20 cm. 1.) Calculate the rate of diffusion, in
cm s^-1, of NH3? 2.) Calcuate the rate of diffusion, in cm s^-1, of the unknown gas? 3.) Calculate the molar mass of the unknown gas? 4.) Was the unknown gas HI, HBr, or H2S and briefly explain why?
Explanation / Answer
A diffusion rate study was done using a 75 cm glass tube, NH3 gas, and an unknown gas that reacts with Nh3 to form a white precipitate. In 340 s the Nh3 traveled 55 cm and the unknown traveled 20 cm.
a. Calculate the molar mass of the unknown gas
b. Was the unknown gas Hl, HBr, or H2S
A. You need Graham's Law to calculate which it is. The molecular mass of ammonia is 17.031 g/mol so M1 = 17. M2 = X or mass of the unknown.
M2=X = M1Rate1^2/Rate2^2 = (17*(55*55))/(20*20) =128.5
