Question

In the third activity we will measure the specific heat of an unknown metal and from thi heat value water at least 2 minutes. s specific identify the material. We will warm an unknown metal sample by submerging it in hot Question 3: (2pts) Symbolically determine the specific heat of the warm metal (c1), without plugging in any numbers. Your answer should be in terms of the mass of the warm metal (m1), the mass of the cold water (m2), the initial temperature of the warm metal (T,1), and the initial temperature of the cold water (T12). Note that since the two materials we are mixing are now different, they should NOT have the same specific heat. You are solving for the specific heat of the warm metal (ci), and the specific heat of water (c2Cwater) can be found in the introduction. Show all your work and box your answer.

Explanation / Answer

Mass of warm metal = m1

Mass of cold water = m2

Specific Heat of cold water = cwater

Initial temperature of hot metal = Ti,1

Initial temperature of cold water = Ti,2

Let the final common temperature of metal and water = T

And let specific heat of hot metal = c1

Here we will use conservation of energy.

I.e. heat released by hot water = heat absorbed by cold water

m1c1(Ti,1-T) = m2cwater(T - Ti,2)

c1 = (m2/m1)cwater(T - Ti,2)/(Ti,1 - T)
