Question

Can someone please solve the question in the picture attached to post. Please show all work. Reviewing for a test this week and this is grealy appreciated with the help your given.

The following data were collected when a GSU graduate working for the POST cereal company used an atomic absorption method to determine the amount of calcium in Corn Flakes breakfast cereal. 1.00 kg of cereal was dissolved in acid, followed by a period of heating (digestion) followed by filtration to remove any insoluble matter. All of the supernatant (containing the calcium) was captured in a 1.00 L flask, which was filled to the mark. Then 100 microliters of this solution were diluted in a 100 mL volumetric flask. The diluted unknown solution was analyzed for its Ca, as were the set of standards. The (diluted) unknown which was prepared as described above gave an absorbance reading of 0.263. What was the mg content of the cereal in mg Ca/100 g cereal? Note: Perform your calculations carefully. Dr K. needs to see all of your work - even if you don't get to the final answer, you may earn partial credit for any steps you do correctly.

Explanation / Answer

y= 0.0291x+0.0039 ,

given absorbance = 0.263 = y ,

hence 0.263 = 0.0291x+0.0039

x = 8.9 ppm ( 1ppm = Ca in mg per 1000 gm cereal)

hence Ca = 8.9 mg per 1000 gm cereal gm

Ca = 0.89 mg /100 gm cereal
