Question

Acetaldehyde + diethyl ether (solvent) react with NaBH4.

When starting material has been converted to product transfer the reaction mixture to a separatory funnel.Extract the reaction mixture with water. Separate the layers and discard the layer that does not contain your product in the waste container.Transfer your final product to a round bottom flask and make sure your flask in on the stir plate.Set-up the distillation apparatus by double clicking on the apparatus. You will need to add N2 gas to your apparatus.  Failure to do so will cause your reaction apparatus to explode.

1. What remained in the distillation flask after all the final product was distilled?

Acetaldehyde

Diethyl ether

Sodium Borohydride

Water

a.

Acetaldehyde

b.

Diethyl ether

c.

Sodium Borohydride

d.

Water

Explanation / Answer

disttilation flask will be having water and NABH4 dissolved in it .

As reaction of acetaldehyde and NABH4 gives reduced product ethanol , after extraction the product with water ethanol will come in to aqueous layer. Now distillation of water and ethanol mixture started. As boiling point of ethanol is lower than water hence ethaol will distill off at firts and will be collected into collector . So remaining water and NAHB4 mixture will be there in distillation flask.
