Question

Please, Answer the following questions in the picture.

Write your answers in pen and include units. Write out the number of items in a mole in scientific notation: standard notation: The number of items (atoms) in a mole is named for a famous chemist. By what name do we know this number? One mole of ethanol molecule, C2H60, contains how many carbon atoms? __ how many hydrogen atoms? __ how many oxygen atoms? __ Define the following terms: limiting reactant (or limiting reagent) __ theoretical yield __ percent yield __ Suppose you are making sub sandwiches to sell at the county fair. Each sandwich is made up of one bun, three slices of ham, and two slices of cheese. If you have 50 buns, 60 slices of ham, and 50 slices of cheese, how many complete subs could you make? What ingredients would be left over? Identify the "theoretical yield" and the "limiting reactant" in this example.

Explanation / Answer

1. a) 6.023 x 1023

b) 602300000000000000000000

2. We call it Avogadro number and represented as NA

3. a) 2 x 6.023 x 1023 atoms. = 12.046 x 1023 carbon atoms

b) 6 x 6.023 x 1023 atoms = 36.138 x 1023 ?hydrogen atoms

c) 1 x 6.023 x 1023 atoms = 6.023 x 1023 Oxygen atoms

4.

a) Limiting reactant is the reactant which limits the amount of product formed in a reaction.

b) Theoretical yield is nothing but the amount of product formed actually according to the stoichiometry of the chemical reagents in a chemical reaction.

c) Percentage yield = (Practical yield) / (Theoretical yield) x 100

5. The ratio of bun : sam : cheese = 1 : 3 : 2

So, that means, 1 bun need 3 times of sam and 2 times of cheese.

Here, slices of ham are the limiting reactant. we can find the limiting reactant as such.

Given, 50 bun , 60 slices of ham , 50 slices of cheese. We divide them with the respective ratio number.

So, bun = 50 / 1 = 50

Slices of ham = 60 / 3 = 20

Slices of cheese = 50 / 2 = 25

So, as 20 is less than all the others, slices of ham is the limiting reactant.

So, we have 60 slices of sam. For this 60/3 = 20 buns are required and 60 x (2/3) = 40 slices of cheese are needed.

Thus, 20 subsandwiches are formed.

30 buns and 10 slices of cheese are left over.

theoretical yield = 20 subs
