Question

Inorganic Chemistry. Group Theory

New materials bring promises for new applications. Indeed MOFs are being applied in, probably, every single application of chemistry (according to me the craziest one is having a MOF-filled fuel cylinder in a BMW -car!). Today we will concentrate, only, on the theory on which the young chemist trusted so much: symmetry and group theory. What is the point group of the metal-site? Derive its MO (hint: concentrate on only one Zn-ion (this part will be easier with Group Theory); consider the O -ions as slightly less electronegative O-atoms. Then combine two ZnO3 units). You must show steps; just drawing the final MO-energy levels will not earn any point.

Explanation / Answer

Point Group: D3h

Symmetry Elements: E, S3, C3, 3C2, 3?v, ?h
