A new mutation at the T locus has arisen in the squirrel population on UNC's campus. The allele makes the coats of heterozygotes Carolina blue. A curious undergraduate wonders if there is a selection advantage due to students giving these squirrels extra food handouts. He counts the number of each genotype in early summer just following a breeding and again just before breeding in the winter. His results were as follows: a. Calculate the Absolute Finesses of the three genotypes: TT, Tt, and tt. b. Calculate the Relative Finesses of the three genotypes: TT, Tt, and tt.Explanation / Answer
Answer a:
So, absolute fitnesses for respective genotypes is the number of alive at reproductive maturity i.e. 1600, 350 and 250 for TT, Tt and tt, respectively.
Answer b:
The survival rates for various genotypes are:
For TT = 1600 X 100 / 3500 = 45.71%
For Tt = 350 x 100 / 400 = 87.5%
For tt = 100 x 100 / 250 = 40%
So the maximum survival rate is for Tt.
Then the absolute fitnesses for respective gentypes will be:
For TT = 45.71 / 87.5 = 0.52
For Tt = 87.5 / 87.5 = 1
For tt = 40 / 87.5 = 0.46
