Question
Information about process;
-Feed to mixer is 100 mol/h C2H4
-nO2 has mole ration of 0.5 to reactor feed (not mixing point feed)
-In the reactor ethylene reacts with oxygen in parallel reactions, single-pass conversion rate of ethylene is 40%, molar ratio of ethylene in reactor product is 3.75
-In seperator; ethylene is recyled to reactor, oxygen and carbon dioxide gases and water vapour are vented to atmosphere and ethylene oxide is fed downstream
-It's discovered some ethylene oxide is being recycled. When this occurs, the ratio of ethylene to ethylene oxide in the reactor feed is 4, reactor product still maintains the original ethylene to water ratio. This is fixed with routine maintenance.
a) Perform degrees of freedom analysis around the mixing point, reactor and seperator
b) Calculate n1,n3,n4 and n5 before and after the routine maintenance
c) Calculate n2, y2, y4 and the fractional conversion of oxygen before and after maitenance
Explanation / Answer
one mole of ethylene requires 1/2 mole of oxygen to form 1 mole of ethyleneoxide
hence in the reactor 100moles of ethylene will require 50 moles of oxygen and it forms 100 moles of ethylene oxide
