Question

College of aR & Department of Chemistry & Earth S 016 ( the flowing IR spectrum is collected for an erganic melecule 3000 cm 2000 cm 1000 cm- Answer the following question (a) This spectrum corresponds to (choose one), then explain your answer (not more than 10 words) -OH (C) NH (D) late the force constant for the bond (A-B) that has an IR frequency stretching indicated by ow in the spectrum. MM (g/mol): O 16; H 1; C 12; N 14 the atoms A & B can be determined based on your answer in (a) your work

Explanation / Answer

The answer is B. phenol

Reason: the peak at 3400cm-1 is broad curve, had it been aniline (C), the peak at 3400cm-1 should have been with sharp edges and 2 peaks should have been observed because of 2 H in NH2. Also the peak at 3400 is more intense confirming a OH peak.

It is not A. because the spectra did not show any C=O peak (ester peak) at around 1725cm-1.

It cannot be D because it has only C=C, C-C, C-H peaks but spectra show OH broad curve peak.
