Problem 10.40 Part A If the pressure exerted by ozone, O3, in the stratosphere is 3.0 x 10^-3 atm and the temperature is 245 K how many ozone molecules are in a liter? Express your answer using two significant figures. N = molecules Part B Carbon dioxide makes up approximately 0.04% of Earth?s atmosphere If you collect a 2.1 L sample from the atmosphere at sea level (100 atm) on a warm day (29 degree C). how many CO2 molecules are in your sample? Express your answer using two significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

Given

Pressure exerted by ozone, O3 in the stratosphere is 3.0 E -3 atm

T = 245 K , Volume = 1L

We find moles of Ozone by using ideal gas law

pV = nRT

n = pV / RT

R = 0.08206 L atm K-1 mol-1

= 3.0 E-3 atm * 1.0 L / (0.08206 L atm K-1 mol-1*245 K )

= 0.000149 mol

We know 1 mol of O3 contains 6.02E23 O3 molecules

Number of molecules O3 in 0.000149 mol O3

= 0.000149 mol O3 * 6.02 E23 molcules of O3/ 1 mol O3

= 8.98 E 19 O3 molecules

Part B )

Given : volume 2.1 L , Pressure = 1.00 atm, Temperature = 29 deg C = 29 deg C + 273.15 = 302.15 K

We find number of moles of CO2 and then by using it we get its molecules

pV = nRT

n = pV / RT

= 1.00 atm * 2.1 L / ( 0.08206 L atm K-1 mol-1 * 302.15 K )

=0.08469 mol

Number of molecules of CO2 in 1 mol = 6.02 E 23 molecules

#molecules of CO2 in 0.08469 mol of CO2

= 0.8469 mol CO2 * 6.02 E 23 molecules / 1 mol CO2

= 5.0987 E 22 CO2 molecules
