Topics chosen are
a. Emergency contraception
Five key points
1. Emergency contraception is a safe way to avoid or prevent pregnancy in case of unprotected sex (e.g. having sex without condom, or the condom slipped away followed by ejaculation).
2. There are 2 types of emergency contraception - a. implanting an IUD (Intra-uterine device) that can be used within 5 days of having sex. It is also the most effective emergency contraception.
& b. taking pills like ulipristal acetate (works till 5 days of having sex) or levonorgestrel pills(effective within 3 days)
3.Emergency contraception through IUD is effective for 5 days, whereas with morning pills it works fine within 3 days (or 72 hrs)
4. Emergency morning pill works by acting on the ovaries and inhibit them from producing eggs, thus blocking the chance of fertilisation. The sperm can remain viable inside the body (reproductive tract) for almost 6 days.
5. Emergency contraceptive pills cost between 25 USD to 50 USD.
b. Pregnancy
Five key points
1. Pregnancy occurs by virtue of fertilization i.e. when the sperm meets the egg. Sperm reaches the reproductive tract through the semen (fluid) that gets ejaculated through the penis. The eggs are produced by the ovaries, that gets matured under the influence of hormones.
2. Common pregnancy symptoms - missed period, swollen/tender breast, nausea, vomiting, fatigue.
3. Twins can be formed by two ways - if an egg gets divided into two and gives rise to two identical twins/ or two different sperms fertilize two different eggs, produces fraternal twins (non-identical twins).
