Question
Couple of problems in biochem I cannot figure out the answer to! Thank you in advance.
1. Draw the condensed structural formula for a mixed triacylglycerol that contains two palmitic acid molecules and one oleic acid molecule on the second carbon (center carbon) of glycerol.
2. Write an equation for the NaOH saponification of glyceryl tristearate (tristearin). (Express your answer as a chemical equation using molecular formulas for lipids. For example, enter C20H32O2 for arachidonic acid.)
3. Why does coconut oil have a melting point that is similar to fats from animal sources? (Please explain in words.)
4. What is the number of ATP obtained from one acetyl CoA in the citric acid cycle?
5. How many ATP molecules are generated from the complete oxidation of one molecule of stearic acid?
6. What do we call the amino acids that humans can synthesize?
Explanation / Answer
3) Coconut oil is an exception.It conatins Lauric and myristic acids which have shorter chains of 12 and 14 carbons, respectively, and they are responsible for the low melting point of coconut oil.
4) 30 ATP will be obtained from two acetyl coA in a complete cycle so 15 ATP will be obtained from 1 acetyl CoA
5) the formula to calcualte ATP from fatty acid is
(n - 1) x 5 + (n x 12) - 2
and in this case n = half of number of carbons in fatty acid
Steric acid has 18 carbons so n = 9.
ATP = 8X5 + (9X12) -2 = 146 ATP
6) The amino acid which we can synthesize in our body are called non essential
