Question
Please explain to me why the first molecule is an acid and not a base? Because I thought since it had an OH bond that it would be the base of the reaction... Thanks!
Correct Response: Be sure to answer all parts. Draw the products of the following proton transfer reaction. Show all unshared electron pairs in your structures. Label the acid and base in the starting materials, and place the conjugate acid and conjugate base products in the appropriate boxes. First molecule belong to a category of organic compounds called carboxylic acids. It is propanoic acid.here the functional group -COOH contains -OH but it will not release -OH beacause if it releases -OH it will form -CO+ which is highly unstable where as when releases H+ ion it will form -COO- which is stable due to resonance. So it will behave as acid only by releasing proton . It never act as base.
