I needed to purify an organic liquid with a boiling point of 187 *C using simple distillation. But nothing distilled into the collection flask and the contents of the distilling pot turned dark and viscous. What went wrong and what should I have done to purify the liquid?

Black color is due to charcoal formed when carbon conyaining compound is burned. Burning of oraganic compound while form residue charcoal which is dark black. This charcoal has contaminated your liquid. Since charcoal's are partcles they can be removed by filtration process. So please remove the charcoal by filtration and it will purified.
