3) How does one recognize an organic acid?

A) COC. B) COH. C) COOH. D) CHO.

4) Nitrate esters are found in some:

A) explosives. B) flavoring agents. C) food preservatives. D) detergents.

5) Phosphate esters are prepared from:

A) ester + phosphate. B) phosphoric acid + alcohol.

C) phosphoric acid + ester. D) phosphoric acid + carboxylic acid.

9) Reacting a carboxylic acid with a base will produce?

A) a carboxylate salt. B) an anhydride. C) an ester. D) no reaction.

10) The IUPAC name of the ester formed from butanoic acid and ethanol is:

A) butyl ethanonate. B) butyl ethanate. C) ethyl butanoate.   D) ethyl proponoate

11) The pleasant, characteristic odor of fruit flavorings is often associated with the presence of:

A) carboxylic salts. B) aldehydes.   C) esters. D) carboxylic acid.

12) The sodium salt of benzoic acid is used as:

A) a soap. B) a flavoring agent. C) an antacid. D) a food preservative.

13) What would be produced as the result of a dehydration reaction between a carboxylic acid and an alcohol?

A) aldehyde. B) ester. C) alkene. D) acid anhydride.

14) What would be the products if ethyl stearate were to undergo hydrolysis?

A) The products would be ethylaldehyde and stearone.  B) The products would be ethyl stearate hydrate.

C) There would be no products as compounds of this nature do not undergo hydrolysis.  D) The products would be ethanol and stearic acid.

15) Which physical relationship is attributed to carboxylic acids?

A) Since the carboxylic acids evaporate quickly they all have a scent.

B) The boiling point of carboxylic acids increases with the molecular weight.

C) The carboxylic acids are wax-like solids in the solid state.  D) None of these responses are correct.

Explanation / Answer

1) Aldehydes are usually higher boiling than carboxylic acids with the same number of carbon atoms:

a) True.   B) False

Carboxilic acids have higher vlaues due to the ability to interact with C=O and OH with polar molecules such as water. Aldehyde has only C=O and C-H bonds. it is still important that there will be hydrogne bonding, but not that high such as carboxilic acids

2) Alpha hydroxy acids can be found in which of the following?

A) apples.   B) sour milk.   C) sugar beats. D) all of the above.

Apples contain plenty of acids, such as malic acid which is a hydroxy acid. This is true, sour milk contains lactic acid which is an hydroxy acid. Sugar which comes from glycolic acids. All these are true

3) How does one recognize an organic acid?

A) COC.    B) COH. C) COOH.   D) CHO.

All C-OH susbtances may experience acidity due to the electornegativity obetween O and H. The Hydrogen may be stripped very easily

4) Nitrate esters are found in some:

A) explosives.   B) flavoring agents.   C) food preservatives.   D) detergents.

Explosives are famous for containing nitrogen. Explosives use N to expand very quickly. Some examples are TNT (tri-nitrotoluene) and Nitroglycerin
