Question

Please ONLY answer Pre-lab.

In this experiment, you will study the dependence of the rate of reaction on reactant concentration and temperature. The concentration dependence will be summarized by solving for an empirical rate law. The sensitivity of the reaction rate to temperature will be indicated by finding the value of the activation energy of the reaction. The objectives of the experiment are to practice the mathematics of rate laws and the Arrhenius equation with real experimental data and to review dilution calculations

Explanation / Answer

For I-

For trial 1

Initial concentration of KI = 0.01 M

M1 = [I-] = 0.01 M

Volume of KI in first trial, V1 = 10 mL

Total volume = 10 + 10 + 10 = 30 mL

M2 of I- = M1V1 / V2

= 0.01 * 10 / 30

= 0.003 M

For trial 2

V1 = 20 mL

V2 = 30 mL

M2 = [I-] = 0.01 * 20 / 30

= 0.006 M

For trial 3 of I-

M1 = 0.01 M

V1 = 10 mL

V2 = 20 mL

M2 = 0.01*10 / 20

= 0.005 M

For trial 4

M1 = 0.01 M

V1 = 10 mL

V2 = 20 mL

M2 = 0.05 M

For trial 5

M1 = 0.01 M

V1 = 7.5 mL

V2 = 27.5 mL

M2 = 0.01 * 7.5 / 27.5

= 0.0027 M

For BrO3-

For trial 1

M1 = 0.04 M

V1 = 10 mL

V2 =- 20 mL

M2 = 0.04 * 10 / 20

= 0.02 M

For trial 2

V1 = 10 mL

V2 = 20 mL

M2 = = 0.02 M

For trial 3

V1 = 20 mL

V2 = 30 mL

M2 = 0.04 * 20 / 30

= 0.026 M

For trial 4 -

V1 = 10 mL

V2 = 30 mL

M2 = 0.04 * 10 / 30

= 0.013 M

For trial 5

V1 = 7.5 mL

V2 = 22.5 mL

M2 = 0.04* 7.5 / 22.5

= 0.013 M

For H+

For trial 1

M1 = 0.1 M

V1 = 10 mL

V2 = 20 mL

M2 = 0.1*10 / 20

= 0.05 M

For trial 2

V1 = 10 mL

V2 = 20 mL

M2 = 0.1 * 10 / 20

= 0.05 M

For trial 3

V1 = 10 mL

V2 = 30 mL

M2 = 0.1 * 10 / 30

= 0.033 M

For trial 4

V1 = 20 mL

V2 = 30 mL

M2 = 0.1 * 20 / 30

= 0.066 M

For trial 5

V1 = 15 mL

V2 = 22.5 mL

M2 = 0.1 * 15/22.5

= 0.066 M
