Distillation ProblemsQuestion 1.
Question 2. What type of distillation (steam, fractional, simple) would you use to separate the compounds below? Breifly explain your choices based on miscibility and boiling points.
All distillations use boiling point differences to separate volatile liquids from mixtures. In complete sentences discuss the differences between steam distillation and distillation of miscible compounds (fractional and simple) in terms of distilling temperature and composition of the distillate during distillation, 4 pts
Explanation / Answer
Post one more question to get the answer 2
1) The fractional distillation is done for two miscible compounds with the difference between the boiling point of two compounds are not more than 25K, it uses the fractionation column that is placed between the flask and the condenser, which will form vapors and then we collect the higher boling point vapors in one fraction and lower boiling point vapors in another fraction
Why Steam Distillation?
Steam Distilation is done for two miscible compounds that are highly sensitive to heating i.e. they break down and decompose on heating, hence the fractional distillation couldn't be applied on such compounds.
