Question

Part A For the reaction shown below, G°rxn is 142 kJ. In which direction is the reaction spontaneous at 25°C, when the pressures of SO2, O2, and SO3 are 0.1 atm, 0.2 atm, and 1 × 10-4 atm, respectively.

2 SO2(g) + O2(g) 2 SO3(g)

a. The forward reaction is spontaneous under these conditions. b. The reverse reaction is spontaneous under these conditions. c. Neither the forward nor reverse reactions are spontaneous; it is at equilibrium under these conditions. d. There is not enough information to determine whether the forward or reverse reaction is spontaneous under these conditions.

Explanation / Answer

2 SO2(g) + O2(g) 2 SO3(g) ; G°rxn = 142 kJ

If G°rxn = +ve the reaction is non spontaneous reaction

If G°rxn = -ve the reaction isspontaneous reaction

If G°rxn = 0 the reaction is at equilibrium.

Since the value of If G°rxn =+142kJ( +ve) for the given reaction the reaction is non-spontaneous reaction in forward direction.

So G°rxn = -142kJ (-ve) for the reverse reaction there by the reaction is spontaneous in the reverse direction

Therefore option(b) is correct
