Question

Relative to the other structure in the brain, which animal do you suppose would have a larger olfactory bulb, the human or the sheep? ______ Briefly explain the difference between gray and white matter in the central nervous system. ________ The _____ ______ are comprised of the superior and inferior colliculi, which are involved in vision and audition, respectively. Cranial nerves are part of the peripheral or central (circle one) nervous system. The femoral nerve emerges from the _____ plexus. Spinal nerve C8 is the most inferior caudal of the cervical spinal nerves. True or False (circle one) Toward the nose or beak is termed ______ Explain the "Rinne" test for audition _______ What can the Rinne test diagnose (detect)? _______

Explanation / Answer

33. ANS: The olfactory bulb is larger in a sheep brain than in the human brain. This larger olfactory bulb allows the sheep to have a stronger sense of smell which is vital to its survival.

The human brain is larger; humans have more motor control and learning abilities. Although sheep have smaller and less developed cerebrums, they have more acute senses b/c they have larger olfactory bulbs.

34. ANS: The CNS has two kinds of tissue: grey matter and white matter, Grey matter, which has a pinkish-grey color in the living brain, contains the cell bodies, dendrites and axon terminals of neurons, so it is where all synapses are. White matter is made of axons connecting different parts of grey matter to each other.

35. ANS: Tectum

Tectum is the dorsal portion of the midbrain that is composed of the superior and inferior colliculi. These colliculi are rounded bulges that are involved in visual and auditory reflexes. The superior colliculus processes visual signals and relays them to the occipital lobes. The inferior colliculus processes auditory signals and relays them to the auditory cortex in the temporal lobe.

36. ANS: The peripheral nervous system refers to parts of the nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord. It includes the cranial nerves, spinal nerves and their roots and branches, peripheral nerves, and neuromuscular junctions.

37. ANS: It arises from posterior divisions of L2-L4 roots of the lumbar plexus.

The femoral nerve is the largest branch of the lumbar plexus, and arises from the dorsal divisions of the ventral rami of the second, third, and fourth lumbar nerves (L2-L4).
