Question

Classify each of the following as an electrolyte or a nonelectrolyte. solid Ca(NO_3)_2________rubbing alcohol (C_3H_8O)__________KCl solution_________H_2O_______If equal amounts of 1M H_2SO_4 and 1M Ba(OH)_2 are mixed, will the mixture be an electrolyte or a nonelectrolyte. Explain your answer. Based on the following dissociation equations, identify which one is a strong acid, HA or HB. HA H^+(aq) + A^-(aq) HB rightarrow H^+(aq) + B^-(aq) Refer to experiment section B and list the compounds that can be used for cold packs. What is the mass percent of sodium hydroxide in a solution that is made by dissolving 8.00 grams of NaOH with 50.00 g of water. A 34.0% by weight sulfuric acid solution has a density of 1.25 g/mL. How many grams of H_2SO_4 are contained in one liter of the solution. The maximum amount of mercury in drinking water is 0.002 ppm. A 25.0 gram sample of water contained 0.0355 grams of mercury. Is the water safe to drink?

Explanation / Answer

1)

a. Solid Ca(NO3)2 – a strong electrolyte

b. Rubbing alcohol (C3H8O) – a weak electrolyte

c. KCl solution – a strong electrolyte

d. H2O – a non electrolyte

2. Both of these are obvious electrolytes because sulfuric acid breaks up into H+ ions and SO42- ions. Barium hydroxide forms Ba2+ ions and OH- ions. However, because these are equal amounts of equal concentration (1M each), they will neutralize each other completely.  Barium sulfate is not soluble, it forms a precipitate (solid). So that doesn't provide any ions for conduction of electricity. The other product is water and pure water doesn't conduct electricity. So the final solution is a nonelectrolyte.

3. A strong acid will dissociate into H+ ions and the accompanying negative ions. The longer bottom arrow of the HA equation shows that this compound mostly wants to exist as HA, meaning the H+ wants to stay attached to A-. The small arrow on top means that only a small amount of HA will dissociate into H+ and A-. The HB equation has one arrow that points to the right. So HB completely breaks into H+ and B-.

4. These would be the ones that are endothermic (absorbs energy) when they dissolve in water. So the ones where it felt cooler or the thermometer showed a drop in temperature are the ones on this list.
