Question

Preparation of trans-[Co(en) 2C2]0i Dissolve 1.6 grams of cobalt (II) chloride hexahydrate in 5-10 mL of deionized water. Add 6 ml of 10% solution of ethylenediamine (or 1,2 diaminoethane) while stirring. Add 2 mL of 30% H202 solution dropwise, then allow solution to stir for 5 minutes. Add 5 mL of concentrated HC in the hood. Evaporate the solution using a hot water bath until the volume is reduced by half and a crust forms over the surface of the mixture. Cool the solution in an ice bath. Filter to recover the crystals. Wash with alcohol. Dry the crystals at 110 C for 1 hour. Hydrogen chloride will be released and the product will remain.

Explanation / Answer

Here 10% solution is used.

I am assuming that you are preparing aquous solution of ethylenediamine.

10% means 10 gm of compound in 100 ml water.

You need 6 ml of it.

100ml need 10 gm, 6ml need how much?

10 x 6/100 = 0.6 gm or 600 mg.
