Lab exercise 8-5: Which of the following statements is NOT true?
Select one:
a. Type AB+ patients have no A, B, or Rh antibodies
b. The agglutination reaction can be performed on a slide
c. AB and Rh are the only antigens on RBCs
d. Type O+ blood is the most common in the U.S.
e. Anti-Rh antibodies are also called anti-D antibodies
Explanation / Answer
1. Option e is correct. VP test (Voges–Proskauer test) is used to detect acetoin in bacterial broth culture. In this test alpha napthol and potassium hydroxides are added to the bacterial broth (Voges-Proskauer broth). A cherry red colour shows the positive test. This test is based on the conversion of glucose to acetyl methyl carbinol (acetoin) by VP positive organism. Alpha napthol and potassium hydroxide reacts with acetoin and gives red colour. VP positive organisms include Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Serratia marcescens, Hafnia alvei, Vibrio cholera biotype eltor, and Vibrio alginolyticus.
2. Option e is correct. Rh antibodies are also called anti-D antibodies (not Anti-RH)
