Hemphill Kejuan Hemphill Indiana Tech ENG /15/2021 If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be? “I have learnt a lot of life lessons over the years, however, the most important one that I would like to share is to be kind; always show kindness to people whenever you get the chance. Everyone out here is going through something and it wouldn’t hurt or cost anything to put a little good into the world. A small act of kindness can mean the world for another; I learn this at an incredibly young age but didn’t know how important it was till I reached high school. Many people say high school is one of the most brutal stages we go through and that might as well be true.
When I was in 11th grade, we had a new kid join our class; he was very social and friendly. However, he would get bullied a lot, but never once did he lash out or uttered anything mean, in fact he would always be smiling and cracking jokes. One day after school, I found him in one of the classrooms crying, I approached him, we talked, and he poured out all his feelings to me and told me that I was the first person he ever opened to and he needed that. That day was the birth of one of the greatest friendships. Sometimes we forget that other people have feelings and throw around hurtful words not knowing the impact it has on someone and I just think that we should think twice before spewing hate into the world. Show kindness to others as you would have wanted kindness to be shown to you.â€

In that instance, I had a choice: I could either ignore his pain or step forward and extend a hand of compassion. I chose the latter, and the simple act of sitting and listening became the catalyst for one of the most sincere friendships in my life. This boy, who once felt isolated and misunderstood, opened up about his struggles, allowing me to understand the profound influence that a small act of kindness could have on someone’s emotional state.
