Post-Lab Questions (Answers must be in full sentences and typed.) 1. Suppose you were not paying attention to your chromatogram and the solvent rose all the way to the top of the paper or TLC plate and remained that way for a period of time before you removed it from the chromatography chamber. Suppose none of the spots have reached the top yet and you assumed the solvent front to be at the top paper or TLC plate. How would this mistake affect Rr values of the ions? Would the Rf values be too high, too low or unaffected? Explain. (Note: When the solvent reaches the top edge of the paper or TLC plate, vaporization will allow the solvent to continue rising up the paper.)

Explanation / Answer

1. If the solvent has reached all the way to the top and you are not sure of the exact level of it.

The Rf values thus calculated would be incorrect and would be too high.

The spots have moved higher than it would be if the tlc plate was removed before it reached to the top.
