Question

Hey guys I really need some help!

Trial 1:

Mass of cold water: 50mL

Temp of cold water: 23.5 C

Mass of hot water: 50mL

Temp of hot water: 62.4 C

Temp of mixed water: 52.0 mL

Trial 2:

Mass of cold water: 50mL

Temp of cold water: 24.0 C

Mass of hot water: 50mL

Temp of hot water: 62.8 C

Temp of mixed water: 51.9 C

Calculate the calorimeter constant for trial 1 and trial 2. For this question, I originally got the answer 364J/C for trial 1 and 326 J/C for trial 2, but my lab checker says they are both incorrect.

Explanation / Answer

From Trial 1,

Heat gained by calorimeter = 50 x 4.184 x (52 - 23.5) - 50 x 4.184 x (62.4 - 52)

                                       = 3786.52 J

calorimeter constant = 3786.52/28.5 = 132.860 J/oC

From Trial 2,

Heat gained by calorimeter = 50 x 4.184 x (51.9 - 24) - 50 x 4.184 x (62.8 - 51.9)

                                       = 3556.4 J

calorimeter constant = 3556.4/27.9 = 127.470 J/oC
