Explanation / Answer
Lime's formula is CaO. It has an oxygen atom and a calcium atom.The oxygen atom has a valency of 2. It means
that it is ready to accept two positive ions to neutralize to water. The primary purpose of Lime in agriculture is to
reduce the acidic content of soil. The nature of lime's structure always accepts the positive ions when applied in
the soil and leaves out Ca ions.
Lets take an example. When CaO reacts with HCl (assumed), Oxygen removes two H+ ions from HCl and gives
water. In that way, It reduces the acidity of the soil. the acidity of soil is the main drawback in crop production and
lime helps to correct it.
