Question

Consider the equilibrium below. Indicate whether each of the stresses listed will cause the system to shift to the right (favor the products), left (favor the reactants), or have no effect.

__________ increase the temperature

__________ add more oxygen

__________ remove some of the SO3 by condensing it

__________ increase the volume of the reaction chamber

__________ add more sulfur dioxide

NOTE: I know the answers are "left, right, right, right, no effect" respectfully. But WHY? Please explain!!!

HTrn =-198kJ/mol

Explanation / Answer

increasing the temperature:
increasing temperature favours endothermic reaction
since backward reaction is endothermic, it will move to left
Answer: left

adding oxygen gas:
adding reactant shift reaction towards product
Answer: right

removing some SO3 gas:
removing product shift reaction to product
Answer: right

increasing volume:
increasing volume, decreases pressure and reaction moved to side with more number of gaseous molecules
since product has more gaseous molecules, it will shift to right
Answer: right

Adding more SO2:
SO2 is solid and hence doesn't effect equilibrium
