ID: A 19. A full syringe contains this equilibrium 2 NO (g)N0(g) If nitrogen dioxide gas is brown and the other gas is colourless, what is observed when the syringe is used to compress this gas mixture? a. The mixture gets darker b. The mixture gets darker then lighter e. None of a.b.c or d. c. The mixture get lighter then darker d- The mixture gets lighter 20. If the equilibrium shown below is heated at a constant pressure H(g) + 1(g)2HI(g) + 65 kJ What is most likely to happen? a. Keq gets larger b. Keq gets smaller c. [H2l gets smaller. d. e. Both a. and c. Both b. and c. What interpretation is correct for the following graph, the equilibrium of the following system: 21. which shows the reaction to some change imposed on PCls(g)+92.5kJPCl(g)+ Cl(g) Pcu time a. Some PCls(g) was injected. b. Some PCls(g) was removed. c· The temperature was increased. The temperature was decreased. The pressure was increased. d· e·Explanation / Answer
19. d The mixture gets lighter.
Explanation: The effect fo any change to the Equilibrium system can be predicted by Le Chatelier's Principle. According to which, when the pressure of the system at equilibrium is raised the equilibrium shifts toward the side with fewer moleculesor moles of gas. With the pressure is raised the system tends to occupy a smaller volume. The gaseous sytem will have a smaller volume with lesser gas molecules.
Thus in the given system, the right side with N2O4 (colourless gas) has only 1 mol of gas, the increase in pressure will shift the gas towards this side. Thus, the colour of the mixture gets lighter on compressing the gas.
