Please type down (easy for me to copy and paste) your response (thoughts) after your reading the following paragraphs. (min 5 sentences, around 150-200 words)
Economic growth has been stagnant for the past 50 years, Olivier Scalabre argues that this is due to us failing to reach the next big manufacturing revolution. Lucky, Scalabre claims that this revolution is in the form of robots. These robots, in collaboration with human workers, can potentially increase manufacturing outputs by 20 percent or more. In addition, 3D printing will also help in economic growth. As technologies in 3D printing evolve, we can potentially use them produce more complex parts at a more efficient manner. These technologies allow for not only increased production, but also allows for customization and Scalabre argues that increased customization allows for smarter and better products. As a result, markets will become closer to home and items will be created in a “made-to-order” order basis, ultimately creating an economic boom.
Although I want this to be our future, where production of better and smarter products are favored over mass produced products, I fear that these automated machines may be threatening the jobs of millions. I disagree with what Scalabre said, as taking away jobs from human and replacing the majority of them with machinery can cause major backlash and peak unemployment rates. Despite this, I do think that there are technologies that aren’t considered but should be. For example, we can use robots to help with surgery, where we have robots calibrated to be extremely precise and accurate to help doctors. In addition, Scalabre claims that “if we play it right”, we will see major economic growth, but what occurs if that doesn’t happen? I believe that these robots and machinery should be used alongside us and not as workers to replace us.
Explanation / Answer
The views mentioned above about the mechanisation of jobs which requires high precision and accuracy is absolutely corrects because we can use machine, robots and artificial intelligence for mass production which occupies various assembly lines (like normal ford car) but for producing any state of the art product, or doing any type of surgery, or interpreting detailed image ( scanning electron microscope) requires human mind as machines are incapable of computing precise information and can never modify as per the requirements and hence it is never possible for a machine to to undertake anything that requires spontaneous decision making or anything that requires high level of craftsmanship and precision.
