Question

In the control of the trp operon by attenuation, which of these conditions will cause the RNA polymerase to continue transcription of the entire operon?

A) Excess Trp allows rapid translation thru the Trp codons in the leader
B) Shortage of Trp stalls the ribosome at the Trp codons in the leader
C) Excess Trp stalls the ribsomes at the Trp codons in the leader
D) Shortage of Trp allows rapid translation thru the Trp codons in the leader

Explanation / Answer

B is the correct answer. So now we are looking at the leader sequence in which the leader transcribed is 14 amino acids long of which two amino acids are trp. The lac of trp will stall the ribosome leading to the ribosome stuck on region one. Now regions 2 and 3 bind with each other, aka no attenuation forms from regions 3&4 and transcription continues. And remember, the trp operon is a always on.
