Question

In the election last November, Republicans took control of the Presidency and Congress. They now have most of the Governors and state legislatures as well. In fact, the Republican Party has not been this strong since the 1930s. Conversely the Democrat Party is strong only in a handful of highly populous states including California, New York and Illinois. While Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by almost 3 million votes, mainly on the strength of her winning margin in California and New York, Donald Trump won almost 60% of the electoral votes reflecting his appeal in the south, midwest and great plains states. Given Trump's advantage in the electoral college, and, given that the electoral college will be around for a long time, how should the Democrat Party make adjustments to be more competitive in the swing states won by Trump in 2016? BTW: Be sure to name those states.

Explanation / Answer

Trump’s poll numbers dipped to surprising lows in historically red states such as Georgia and Arizona. The last time either state voted Democratic was two decades ago.The term “swing states” is well known today, but the same few states determining several consecutive presidential elections is a recent occurrence. Most of these states usually vote Republican, except Iowa and Ohio.
