Question

Assume that you only have data from filters #1 and #2. For the following question, choose the answer that correctly describes the appearance of the sample in both filters (i.e. which is brighter or darker). Can you distinguish anorthosite from green leaf? If so, how? CHOOSE BEST ANSWER

-Yes, anorthosite is brighter than green leaf in both filters.

- No, they look the same in both filters.

-Yes, green leaf is brighter than anorthosite in both filters.

Anorthosite : : : : : Reflectance | Olivine Green Leaf 0.1 Basalt 400 500 600 700 800 900 1000 Wavelength (nm)

Explanation / Answer

Yes, green leaf is fainter than anorthosite in filter 1 but brighter than anorthosite in filter 2.

because we can see from the graph that in filter 1 green leaf has low or decreasing reflectance value ~0.2-0.12 means less proportion of light or radiation reflected from it.

but on the other side in filter 1 anorthosite has also decreasing reflectance value  ~0.45-0.4 but higher than the reflectance value of green leaf, means more proportion of light or radiation reflected from it.

in case of filter 2, we can see  from the graph that reflectance value of green leaf is not varying, it has a constant value 0.68 but this value is greater than the anorthosite having reflectance value 0.47-0.5. that means more reflection have taken place from green leaf than the anorthosite.

so,as conclusion, more reflection brighter appearence and less reflection faint appearence.

that's why green leaf is fainter than anorthosite in filter 1 but brighter than anorthosite in filter 2.
