Most temperament theories presume a biological basis to those behavioral tendencies thought to be temperamental in origin. Behavioral genetic methods can be used to test this assumption. Twin and adoption studies suggest that individual differences in infant and child temperament are genetically influenced.some children cry easily and intensely whereas others are more easy going; some are highly active and always on the go where others are more sedentary; some attend and persist in tasks for long periods of time where others’ attention wanders quickly. It is these individual differences and the variations in between that are of interest to behavioral geneticists.Temperament is that part of the personality that seems to be controlled by genetics.There are basically three types of temperament: easy or flexible fearful and sensitive, and feisty or difficult of children. All children need not fall into the three categories. 65% of children may fall under easy or flexible category, 10% of children may fall under active of feisty category and 15% can be into slow to warm or cautious category. Children who have the same temperament type might react differently in similar situations or at different stages of development. Lastly, it is important to understand that although a child's basic temperament does not change over time, the intensity of temeperamental traits can be affected by a family's cultural values and parenting styles. Parents support can strengthen the trait as they are the keen observers of the child behaviour. For example, when a stranger comes into a room wherein two infants were in the room. The cautious infant looks for her caregiver and once she finds her, relaxes, where as an easy temperament reacts to the stranger immediately with a smiling face. For the easy or flexible child, there should be a regular check about her behaviour and initiate communication about her emotions and make her understand that her feelings and preferences are recognized and validated and work her to communicate her feelings and needs of others. For example, If she needs a particular thing, you can tell him, It is being used by others.For the active or feisty child, should be flexible and patient in your interactions as a child who is feisty can experience intense emotions and reactions. A peaceful environment should be provided for them. Special attention need to be paid for them and making sure that the child hears and understands what will happen next in order toensure smooth experiences throughout the day. For the slow to warm or cautious child, additional preparation and support should be provided for new situations or people who become part of his environment. Set up a predictable environment and stick to aclear routine.Give children who are cautious ample time to establish relationships with new children or to getcomfortable in new situations.
