Question
Medical Questions - This requires THREE FULL PARAGRAPHS with 300 WORDS EACH.
***The research topic is regarding the role of a Surgical First Assistant with 1) assisting with pneumatic tourniquets for patients, and 2) assisting in orthopedic surgery.***
FYI - A surgical first assistant is an integral part of the surgical team. The team works together in the operating room to ensure the patient receives quality care during a surgical procedure. A surgical first assistant works closely with the surgeon to facilitate the procedure and process of surgery.
Instructions:
Critically examine three primary risk assessment issues and how it encompasses a fundamental aspect of theory in peri operative care which also includes accountability and consent for the Surgical First Assistant to provide care.
Be sure to include proper references for citations and further reflection.
Explanation / Answer
In a study by Sharma and Salhotra(2012) ,three primary risk assessment issues were:
1. Safe time limit for tourniquet use
2. Inflation pressure of the tourniquet
3. Continuous monitoring of parameters like hypertension and tachycardia as a surrogate of tourniquet pain and temperature of the limb while the tourniquet cuff is inflated.
Patient safety should be the primary consideration while using pneumatic tourniquet and accessories. The test run should be performed as per the manufacturers’ written instructions. Assessment of the patient for any preoperativel risks by the perioperative nurse should be performed and if found shoule be reported to the surgeon. The pneumatic tourniquet should be connected to the appropriate power/gas source, the components should be handled and the cuff applied in a manner to minimize the risk of patient injury. The extremity should be exsanguinated before inflation of the tourniquet with the inflation pressure as the minimum effective pressure with minimum inflation and deflation time (Sharma & Salhotra, 2012).
