Discussion Topic: The Easy Way Out
You are having lunch with your friend Nellie, who works in a family practice clinic across the courtyard. Over lunch one day, Nellie confides, “In our office, we code all new Medicare patient visits Level 1 (99201). It’s so much easier, and we don’t have to worry about Medicare auditing our records.” What, if anything, might you tell your friend?

PRICE: This week we are looking at the fourth element of P.R.I.C.E, which is C and stands for “Caring”. Empathy and caring in the workplace is an important skill to exhibit as a healthcare professional. In a separate paragraph in your initial discussion post, please discuss the following:
• How is listening an important element of a caring attitude?
• How can being observant show compassion and caring?
• What is the common denominator between working relationships and the patients?
Explanation / Answer
1. ANS: Listening importance in caring attitude:
A skilled nurse who possesses confidence, competence, communication and caring (Rankin and Stallings, 2001) would be more successful in promoting the client's self efficacy (Bandura, 1998), The nurse should demonstrate that she has expertise, credibility, knowledge, skills, attitude and understanding. She must show warmth, genuine interest in the client's welfare, empathetic understanding and must demonstrate active listening. This will promote the client's self esteem. It will convey to the client that his is worthy of the nurse's time and commitment. The client learns to trust the nurse, and in return, the nurse gains the patient's confidence.
Skilled questioning by using closed- and open-ended questions is essential because it serves to encourage conversation, promote information gathering and clarifies the issues involved. It can also inform the nurse about the client's feelings and beliefs. A person centred care approach helps to develop a professional relationship. It is essential that the nurse recognizes the importance of respecting her client while making a conscious effort to engage her client in the decision making process.
2. ANS: Compassion and caring:
Compassion is one of the many feelings embedded within Love. Compassion means opening your heart, feeling what others feel and really understanding their problems while showing them you care. It generally arises when you are confronted with another’s suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering. Compassion is not the same as empathy or altruism, though the concepts are related. There are many different ways to show compassion for others; the important thing is that it comes from your heart.
Ways to Showing Compassion:
1. Show Kindness.
2. Communicate Verbally and Non-verbally.
3. Touch (if appropriate).
4. Encourage others and respect their privacy.
5. Express Yourself.
