Physics Question about collision. ( Inelastic collision )
Problem: (Similar to 10.95, but less humane) A bird, mB = 0.470 kg, is flying horizontally at y8, = 250 m/s, not paying much attention, when it suddenly flies into a stationary vertical rod, hitting it d=250cm below the top. The rod is uniform, L 0.740m long, has a mass of m, = 1.60 kg, and is hinged at its base. Unlike the MasteringPhysics homework, however, this time the bird goes splat on the rod, and is stuck to it at the point of impact. What is the angular velocity of the [bird+rod] just after the collision?Explanation / Answer
Accordint to conservation of angular momentum
mB *(L-h) * VB = (1/2) Mr *w
solving for w = mB (L-h) VB /(1/3) Mr L^2 = 0.47* (0.74-0.25)2.5/ (1/3)1.6(0.74)^2 = 1.97 rad/s
b)
Using conservation of energy
(1/2) Ir w^2 + U = (1/2) Ir W1^2 +U2
w1 = srqt [ w^2+ (mr g (l/2)/(1/2)(1/3)MrL^2) ] = sqrt [ w^2 + 3g/L] = 6.6 rad /s
