Explanation / Answer

According to Andy Puddicombe, mindfulness is all about being in the present moment, living it to the fullest and not focusing too much on thoughts. He basically puts forth that mindful meditation needs to be practiced everyday for just ten minutes. The 12 step program or MAT is also there to help people deal with addiction in their day-to-day life.

In my opinion being mindful of what we think and then using meditation to deal with addiction will be more powerful and helpful. Mindfulness is not something that an individual can have instantly; it will take a lot of practice, will and determination. In mindfulness, it is never advised to stop thoughts but an objective observation of ones’ thoughts is encouraged. The person is encouraged to take a step back and observe a thought which comes to mind, without stopping that thought from coming, because if one indulges in thought stopping, thought rebound will occur, which will again create stress in the individual and the individual will give in to the temptation once again.

I would say that meditation is anytime better than 12 step program or MAT because in MAT, medicines are used to deal with addiction. This is again creating a dependence in the individual about the medicines whereas using mindfulness or meditation empowers the individual to gain control over their own selves. Thus, mediation is always a better option to reduce stress, anxiety and other negative emotions.
