Question

Consider the circuit in the figure below, in which V = 36 V and R = 16 ?. The switch has been open for a long time. It is closed at t = 0 s.

What is the current through the 16 ? resistor

(a) immediately after the switch is closed?

(b) after the switch has been closed a long time?

(c) immediately after the switch is reopened?

Explanation / Answer

if the switch is open for long time, inductor has no energy.
so when the switch will be closed,

the inductor will act like an open circuit.

hence current=V/(R+10)=1.3846 A

b)after a long time, the inductor will be saturated and the inductor will be short circuit.

hence current through 16 ohms =0

c)immediately after that if switch is opened, the current through inductor wont change

hence current through 16 ohms=current through inductor prior to opening of the switch=36/10=3.6 A
