DQ2: Occupational stress

These don’t need to be answered in 1-2-3 order. Use the following questions as a guide for your answer. They are the springboard for discussion and the topics should be addressed in your answer. Be sure to support your opinions and suggestions. That is what academic discussion is all about!:

Do you have burnout or brownout? Is it due to your type of occupation or gender? Would you classify your personality as a ‘workaholic”? Looking at the Occupational Stress Model, identify your source(s) of stress, your individual characteristics and any symptoms you may suffer. If you suffer from burnout/brownout, please explain how you will improve your work situation to make it less stressful.

If you are not currently experiencing either burnout or brownout, what strategies can you put in place now to prevent this in the future? If you are not yet in your career, research the probability that your future career may be a stressful one and report your findings. Be sure to cite your source.

Explanation / Answer

Q1. College Stress
College life is a beautiful and most fruitful time one’s educational life. It provides enough opportunities and equal challenges to someone to develop as a full-fledged adult. The role of stressors should not be undermined. There are different types of stressors that I came across as a student.
Sticking to timeline – Education is all about working to time. Submitting assignments, preparing for the exams, waiting for exam results have caused enough stress that I had to look for an outlet every time to cope-up with the stress. I started sitting with friends and studying and at times I changed my place of study, for example, instead of studying in my room, I went out to a park and studied. I also took a brisk walk in the park before and after studying.
Friendship – There were lot of struggle forming and maintaining friendship. There were even times when fight among our friends because of some silly reasons caused enough stress. I tried to explain things to my friends and accepted if the fault was mine.
Physical Appearance – There were times when I shied away from people because I thought I was not good looking, so I hid myself from people, especially the opposite gender, who kept passing comments on me. Later I understood that it’s not all about the physical self but more about the inner self. I just smiled at people and read more about understanding self and overcoming inferiority complex.

Q2.
I had never browned-out because I have a wonderful family that supports me. I have burnt out at times because of the job demands. My boss wanted me to take up tasks that are not mine but someone else who didn’t attend office that day. I was also overlooked for promotion, although I had contributed more. I have tried to keep my cool but at times, it doesn’t just happen. I’m not a workaholic either because I strongly believe that I need to spend time with myself in order to make sure that I’m not browned out and to prevent my burnout, the next day.
In order to prevent future occupational stressors that would burn me down, I’ll plan and organise my work. I won’t postpone my work, instead, I’ll complete my work on time. In order not to be browned out, I’ll go play an outdoor game, read books and spend time with family and friends.
