Question

There are two boxes on a horizontal surface. The first has a mass of 3.0 kg and the second has a mass of 5.0 kg. The coefficient of friction between the masses and the horizontal surface is 0.4. The tension T is the string between the two boxes is 80N. Assume that the masses of the strings are negligible and neglect the air resistance. There is also an applied pulling force to the right of the second box.

Find the common acceleration of the boxes. and Find the applied force (by the arrow to the right of the second box).
The answers should be 22.75m/s^2 and 213.35N respectively, just don't know how to solve for them.

Explanation / Answer

so for first box T -friction= m a

80 -0.4*3*9.81= 3 *a

a = 80/3 -0.4*9.81= 22.75 m/s^2

for second box

F - T - friction = ma

F = 5*(22.75) + 80 + 0.4*5*9.81 = 213.35 N
