Moving blocks connected by a spring Two identical 0.16 kg blocks (labeled 1 and 2) are initially at rest on a nearly frictionless surface, connected by an unstretched spring, as shown in the upper diagram, where X2 = 0.06 m. Then a constant force of 6 N to the right is applied to block 2, and at a later time the blocks are in the new positions shown in the lower diagram, where X1 = 0.01 m and X3 0.06 m. Then a constant force of 6 N to the right is applied to block 2, and at a later time the blocks are in the new positions shown in the lower diagram, where x1 0.01 m and x3 = 0.12 m. At this final time, the system is moving to the right and also vibrating, and the spring is stretched. 1Initial Initial2 x=0m x=x2 Final x=x1 x=x3Explanation / Answer
(1) Since point 2 is move from 0.06 to the point 0.12 therfore the distance covered by the point is
= 0.12 - 0.06 = 0.06 m
(2) Work done = force*distance
Work done = 6*0.06 = 0.36 J
(3) energy will be translational kinetic energy , spring potential energy , vibrational kinetic energy.
(4) Change in the energy = work done on the system = 0.36 J
(5) Final energy stored in the system = kinetic + potetntial = 0.36 J
