Question
Can someone please help me with my bioethics, I need to better understand the philosophies behind what is being asked of me in this question. Thank you in advance
Topic:
Imagine you have a patient with HIV. You ask him to tell his wife, for her protection, but he refuses because he doesn’t want her to know that he cheated on her. Arguing from a Kantian perspective, discuss whether or not you have a moral obligation to tell his wife according to that theory. Be sure to include examples of how Kant's theory applies in this situation. Additionally, use that theory to determine if your moral obligation outweighs your legal obligation to keep your patient's health information confidential.
You then need to provide arguments / discussion points based on Kant's moral theory to support that thesis.
Explanation / Answer
Kan's moral theory:
Kantian refers to the philosophy of the German thinker Immanuel kant.. Kant's contributions to philosophy marked a greater shift in how people thought of the world and how it worked..kant connected empiricist, who believed that all true knowledge comes from experience, and the rationalists, who believed that true comes from rational thought, regardless of experience..This rationals in all minds that were able to make choices deciding right and wrong, when people faced with a moral choices and trying to decide which course of action to take.
Universalizability it means it can not be right for you if it would not be right for every one else in a similar situation.. The ideas of equality, liberty and the pursuit of happiness all stem from the Kantian philosophy that a rational mind given any common situation is capable of making a correct ethical choices and should be allowed to do so..
According to Kant's moral theory and legal obligation to keep patients health information confidential is true..so it is upto patient choice to open his health status (HIV) to his wife or not.. because there is a reason he doesn't want to cheated her..so based on Kantian perspective people choice and situation for anyone to make correct ethical choices and it can be allowed to do so..
