Question
Hi I am not sure how to solve this problem can someone please help me and provide a step by step solution
P4.4 As in E4.6, a hydraulic lift is shown in the figure. A smaller cylinder is connected
through a tube to a larger cylinder. The surface area of the fluid in the smaller cylinder
is A1, and in the larger cylinder it is A2. Assume that A2 = 4A1 and that the fluid is incompressible. A heavy object is placed on a piston in the larger cylinder, as in the figure below. A smaller force F can exert a larger force F? on the other piston. If F = 100 N, what is the value of F?? Hint: Recall how force relates to the pressure p, which is the
same at the top of each cylinder, assuming we can ignore effects of gravity.
Explanation / Answer
Here ,
force F = 100 N
A2 = 4 * A1
as the pressure is same at same level in both tubes as these are connected
F/A1 = F'/A2
100/A1 = F1/(4 * A1)
solving for F'
F' = 400 N
the force exerted on the larger piston F' is 400 N
