Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before... Now, I know that in the series and movies, the Starship Enterprise had a Warp drive that allowed faster then light travel... In this assignment they don't. The fastest the ship can travel is a modest 0.95c. We assume that it's acceleration however is instantaneous. The voyages of the spaceship Enterprise are under oversight by the Star Fleet Command back on earth. (a) Who will measure the proper distance and who the proper time that the spaceship Enterprise will travel during its voyage? The crew or the Star Fleet Command? (b) Assuming that the crew spends half of the mission time travelling at max speed and the other half exploring a planet, what is the maximum distance they measure to have travelled? What value does the Star Fleet Command get? (c) What will be the age difference between identical twins at the end of the mission, if one served aboard the Enterprise for the entire mission, and the other worked for the Star Fleet Command? (d) There are 150 crew on board, who on average weigh 70kg. The ship itself weighs a further 150t. As we all know Scotty often has to fix the anti-matter drive that freely converts stored mass into kinetic energy to accelerate the ship and vice versa upon breaking. How much mass storage is needed to be able to achieve the 0.95c max speed? How much more stored mass would be needed to achieve 0.99c?
